Abstract
Eleven drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of viral infections (other than those caused by human immunodeficiency virus type-1 {HIV-1} or those complicating such infection) will be reviewed in this article. Antiviral drug design could, in principle, be targeted at either viral proteins or cellular proteins. The first approach is likely to yield more specific, less toxic compounds, with a narrow spectrum of antiviral activity and a higher likelihood of virus drug-resistance development.Â
