Abstract

It is frequently difficult for traditional medication delivery methods to regulate drug release and attain enough concentrations at the desired target location. The primary cause of this is the unpredictability of plasma concentrations linked to conventional drug delivery techniques. However, by enabling spatial control of medication release, controlled drug delivery devices provide an answer. Osmotic pumps are one of these technologies that has demonstrated significant promise for controlled drug delivery, having uses in implanted devices as well as oral delivery. Osmotic pumps are made up of a semipermeable membrane enclosing an inner core that holds the drug and osmoses. As the volume of the core grows due to the absorption of water, the medication solution is forced out through delivery ports. The fact that the medication release rate of osmotic pumps is constant regardless of the pH and hydrodynamics of the surrounding medium is one of their fundamental advantages. The push-pull system, Rose-Nelson pump, Higuchi-Leeper pump, Alzet and Osmet system, and elementary osmotic pump are only a few of the iterations that have advanced the development of osmotic systems. Recent developments have produced asymmetric membrane-based devices and controlled porosity osmotic pumps. The osmosis concept, osmotic pump materials, various pump types, and the advantages and disadvantages of commercially available products based on this system are the main topics of this article. Controlled drug delivery systems, which make use of osmotic principles, present a viable way to get beyond the drawbacks of traditional drug delivery devices and enable more accurate and dependable drug release at the intended target location.
